The difference you made
You were there for refugees every step of the way
This year, we have seen so much compassion and generosity from Australians like you. You have stood alongside refugees, providing essential support as they seek safety.
Because of you, caring UNHCR staff welcomed refugees with open arms and provided life-saving supplies, shelter, healthcare, nutrition and clean water. Your support helped UNHCR continue its work in 134 countries around the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Thank you for protecting families forced to flee and giving them hope for a better future. Here's just some of the life-changing work you made possible last year.
Thank you!
Around the world...
you rushed life-saving supplies to people in need when violence erupted and disaster struck.
In Syria and Iraq...
you helped provide shelter, core relief items
and protection to families forced to flee renewed conflict in northeast Syria.
In Yemen...
you provided emergency shelter and life-saving supplies to families devastated by war and poverty.
In Bangladesh...
you ensured families can meet their daily needs and lead dignified and meaningful lives.
With your help...
UNHCR has built more than 1,600 learning spaces for Rohingya children and deployed 1,251 trained teachers.
And families in Cox’s Bazar now have access to clean water through 15 chlorinated water networks and 679 new tube wells.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo...
you helped provide immediate help for survivors of sexual violence.
In Uganda...
the Australia for UNHCR-funded Vocational Training Centre officially opened, giving young refugees the chance of a better future.
For refugee children...
you provided care and protection, giving them the chance to feel like a child again.
As winter approached...
you helped families living in makeshift shelters protect themselves against the cold with blankets, heaters and winter clothing.
And here in Australia...
you fundraised and stood with
refugees at community events.
What we have achieved is amazing, but there’s so much more to be done.
In 2020, we promise to keep:
- Supporting people forced to flee violence, persecution, war or disaster.
- Advocating for the rights of refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced and stateless people, wherever they are in the world.
- Ensuring children feel safe, cared for and can continue their education.
- Raising awareness of climate change as a driver of displacement and improving the sustainability of our operations.
- Empowering refugees to build a better future for themselves and their families.
